- (三歸, 三归)
Triśaraṇa, or Śaraṇa-gamana. The three surrenders to, or "formulas of refuge" in, the Three Precious Ones [lang id =1028]三賓, i.e. to the Buddha [lang id =1028]佛, the Dharma [lang id =1028]法, the Saṅgha [lang id =1028]僧. The three formulas are [lang id =1028]歸依佛 Buddham śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi, [lang id =1028]歸依法 Dharmaṃ saraṇaṃ gacchāmi, [lang id =1028]歸依僧 Saṅghaṃ śaraṇaṃ gacchāmi. It is "the most primitive formula fidei of the early Buddhists". The surrender is to the Buddha as teacher [lang id =1028]師, the Law as medicine [lang id =1028]藥, the Ecclesia as friends [lang id =1028]友. These are known as the [lang id =1028]三歸依.
